What does withholding tax (Quellensteuer) mean?
With withholding tax, the employer deducts the tax directly from your salary and remits it. Whether it applies to you depends on residence status and personal situation, among other factors. The tariff and amount can differ depending on canton, family situation, income, and other factors.
Withholding tax is not always the final step
Depending on income, assets, other income, and personal circumstances, a regular assessment (ordentliche Veranlagung) may be mandatory or can be done upon request. Deadlines and consequences must be checked for the respective tax year and the responsible canton. A request for subsequent regular assessment can also lead to a higher tax burden.
Why canton and municipality matter
Swiss tax burden consists of federal, cantonal, and municipal taxes. Therefore, the same income situation can yield different tax amounts depending on the place of residence. A simple nationwide estimate serves only as an initial guide.
Carefully review possible deductions
Contributions to pillar 3a as well as certain professional, insurance, or family costs can be tax-deductible under certain requirements. Applicability and maximum amounts vary and depend on your situation. Therefore, use up-to-date official information for the relevant tax year.
When a personal review is particularly important
- Income, real estate, or assets in Germany or other countries.
- A move between cantons or municipalities.
- Self-employment, secondary income, or multiple employers.
- Marriage, separation, children, or other changes in the household.
- A potentially mandatory or voluntary subsequent regular tax assessment.
